DAY #17

Hey all.
I thought I'd start by saying how lucky I am to be alive.
I am really lucky to be alive.
No, really. I have had my close calls with the brain munchers over the years... I have literally almost died multiple times.
The first time my life was threatened was a long time ago now... I must have been about 13 or so. Back then, there were far fewer zombies around. More like two to one instead of two thousand to one... the infection had only just reached the UK. I was on my way home from school with some friends of mine, when from behind us staggered a group of young men who looked very unwell. They were all bleeding quite heavily, looked pale and disgusting and has these blood-curdling emotionless moans. We were naive at the time. We stopped. We had never experienced anything like this before. Usually the streets were zombie free. Before we knew what was going on, one of the infected hurled themself at my friend, who struggled and fell. We rushed to his aid only to be cut off by the other two snarling ghouls. We wanted to run, but we didn't want to leave our friend. We decided to fight. Barging past the lumbering undead, we tackled the zombie that was pinning our screaming, flailing friend. The monster tumbled away, but the others were closing in with a look of bloodlust in their eyes. We had nowhere to run. We were cornered. Just when we thought we were dead meat, a local builder who must have heard our screams came to our rescue. He wrenched them away from us and threw them onto the floor, giving us time to escape. But they didn't stay down. He ordered us to run... I have never run so fast in my life. I will always remember glancing back to see that poor man being overwhelmed by those three... things. He gave his life to save ours.
I will never forget him.
I made a promise to myself that day that I would survive the outbreak, and I would find a cure for the infection. I would never do something as stupid again, I would always run at the earliest sign of danger...
Heh.
That turned out to be a promise I would break many times.
But, that's a story for another day.
Maybe I'll tell you tomorrow.
Until then,
